Lori Henry’s Travel Newsletter- Fall 2009

Hi everyone,

For new subscribers, I’ve posted my inaugural summer 2009 newsletter here

Lori Henry Getting Ready for the Zip Line in Steady Brook, Newfoundland (Canada).

Relatively speaking, it’s been a quiet fall for travel. Saying that, though, I was out of town for 3 of 4 weeks in October, exploring both Newfoundland and Winnipeg, Manitoba.

I decided to visit a friend living in Corner Brook, Newfoundland on “vacation,” although the more planning I did, the more I realized that travel writers just don’t have vacations :)

I’m not complaining, though, so I hopped on my flight from Vancouver to Deer Lake and arrived in Newfoundland for the first time.

My friend Colin took me caving, hiking up the Man in the Mountain trail, and walking along city paths: The Steam Trail, Margaret Bowater Park and Steady Brook Falls.

What did I give him back in return? A trip to the local (and new) zip line! We also took a mandatory road trip to the other side of the island, St. John’s, possibly the most exciting city in the Maritimes.

The highlights there: the artists houses along The Battery near Quidi Vidi Village, the most easterly point in North America, the surprising sushi joint (thanks to Colin’s quick eye) and, the reason for going when we did, crazy Mardi Gras Halloween on St. George Street.

I then had a quick overnight back in Vancouver at the save-my-life Fairmont Vancouver Airport hotel, before jetting off to Winnipeg the next morning to do research for my cultural dancing book.

Here I learned how to do First Nations hoop dancing; watched a competition pow wow in the arena that the Vancouver Canucks farm team, the Manitoba Moose, plays in; found more sushi joints; stopped by the French Canadian quarter; and dined on divine French cuisine.

Closer to home, I dug into First Nations history in BC and had the chance to interview our local hero and captain of the Vancouver Canucks, Roberto Luongo, about the upcoming Olympics and his potential spot on Team Canada. The same week, I also got to interview ex-NHLer Vincent Damphousse, as he’s opening a fascinating new spa in Whistler called Le Scandinave Spa. Those articles coming soon.

My biggest publishing news is the piece I wrote for Western Living magazine with Editor-in-Chief Charlene Rooke called Stay Green. I also now have my first clip from Readers Digest Canada, a profile on the founder of Shelley’s Angels Society, a non-profit I am a board member of. All in all, a good fall season, me thinks.

Here’s to a snowy winter and a family-filled holiday season. I’m starting it off by getting laser eye surgery and starting the New Year off sans glasses. Talk to you next year!

Cheers,
Lori
