So, what to do on my first morning in Corner Brook, Newfoundland? I’m staying with a friend just south of Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, a five-minute drive to downtown Corner Brook.
We decided to get acquainted with the crispy fall weather (it’s hovering at just above freezing and cloudy) and walk a downtown trail. The Corner Brook Stream Trail runs in three parts and we took what is called the Glynmill Inn Pond Trail, an approximately 2 km jaunt that follows the stream in the centre of the city.
Though the sky was quite grey and the air cold, the trees are changing shades of burnt oranges, reds and yellows, not shy at all to scatter their leaves all over the paths. Glynmill Inn pond is home to a flock of geese, as well as ducks that swim in formation and make undulating “v” shapes as they swim past.

The object of our walk, however, was to grab a cup of coffee from Brewed Awakening café, a brisk 15-minute walk along the trail, and the “only good café in Corner Brook,” I heard. (I spent the late afternoon here using their free wireless internet to catch up on emails and get some work done. The guy working there even gave me a free brownie– deliciously baked goods here– when he broke it in half and didn’t think he could sell it. Good people 
)
The Corner Brook Stream Trail runs much farther than this and ends up filtering into the Bay of Islands. The trail is well-marked and an easy walk.

What I Liked:
- Also along the trail, you can’t miss the immense Glynmill Inn. This 1925 accommodation (with a more contemporary wing added in the 70s) is the old world charm of Corner Brook. Rooms are simple and comfortable and keep the 1925 feel, but with modern amenities like wireless internet, in-room coffee makers, flat screen TVs (some rooms are still waiting for theirs), a fitness room and the suites have Jacuzzi tubs.
- The three dining options also look great. There’s a fine dining restaurant, pub and an underground wine cellar.

Since I moved back home to Corner Brook, the walking trails are one of the things I have been most impressed with. They really are beautiful. Brewed is also a great spot.

Yes, the trails are really kept up well by volunteers and they do an amazing job. It’s so nice to have such peaceful trails right in the downtown core of a city. Yup, the crew at Brewed Awakening are great!
