US Airways Stops Charging for Drinks

I always consider US Airways one of the worst airlines for charging all the extra little bits onto a flight. They charge, among a host of other things:

  • $15 for the first checked bag
  • $25 for the second
  • curbside check-in is an extra $2 (although they don’t ask for tips, which is a small positive)
  • $100-$200 for up to the 9th bag!

As is usual these days, food is charged starting at $7 on flights over 3.5 hours and $5 snacks on flights over 2.5 hours (but if it’s a shorter flight, I don’t think you’re offered anything). CEO Doug Parker said that they were the only airline left still charging for beverages.

US Airways announced proudly today that it will bring back free drinks. Beginning on March 1st, the airline will be so gracious as to offer juice, tea, bottled water and coffee at no extra charge.

But don’t worry, the airline isn’t giving up on ALL its fun fees: they still charge $7 for a blanket and pillow set, which you have the privilege of keeping after the flight. These fees, along with the now-common fee for “premium seating” is forecasted to make US Airways US$400 million to US$500 million this year.
