Kevin making introductions to "grandma" while snowshoeing on Grouse Mountain, BC
My winter sport of choice has always been skating, so I hadn’t tried snowshoeing before. I was delighted to get the chance to strap on some snowshoes (very lightweight and modern, not the expected wooden ones!) and take a lovely walk on Grouse Mountain.
The beginning of February can be a gamble weather-wise on lower ground, but a group of us travel writers were treated to a gloriously sunny day by mother nature. The snow was substantial enough to please the skiers and snowboarders, yet the air wasn’t too nippy for us snowshoers.
After strapping on the snowshoes, I marched around in a circle to get the hang of walking with feet double my size six and a half.
Our gregarious host Kevin, wearing a very stylish “business suit,” took us to his “office” of the snowshoe park trails. Gentle hills and gorgeous views abounded, with the highlight being the plentiful wood carvings along the path.

Outdoor Hockey Game on Grouse Mountain, BC
Try to find the pine beetle chomping on a tree (clever), the eagle about to take flight, and “grandma,” a charming figure carved into a tree.
The one thing I would go back and do next time is rent a pair of skates and join in on the tiny outdoor hockey game!
