Scott Augustine, Alison Denham, Edmond Kilpatrick, Josh Martin & David Raymond
I was swept away last night by an outstanding dance performance at the Scotiabank Dance Centre. Choreographer Wen Wei Wang presented his Rio Tinto Alcan Performing Arts Award-winning Cock-Pit.
It featured four males (Scott Augustine, Edmond Kilpatrick, Josh Martin, David Raymond) and one female performer (Alison Denham) in an explosion of the city’s finest contemporary dance.

It was also a chance for next year’s award (a $60,000 award, the largest of its kind in Canada) to be announced. Theatre Replacement will debut its not-yet-finished show “The Greatest Cities in the World” to audiences next year.
James Long and Maiko Bae Yamamoto were on hand to accept the award and will be joined by their collaborators Cande Andrade, Jesse Garlick, Veda Hille and Susan Elliot in creating this piece.
Rio Tinto Alcan is a most surprising supporter of the arts and has been handing out this award for 10 years. (They are “a leading international mining group.”) Quite an impressive investment in our artistic community.
It was a lovely evening out. Chatting with folks at the after show reception, it was a wonderful reminder of how really good art can spark inspiration, awe and community.
