Gulf of Georgia Cannery Historic Site in Richmond, BC
As I mentioned earlier, I don’t make it across the bridge to Richmond, BC very often, but on top of the fantastic Asian restaurants, the area has some interesting historic sites that are worth checking out:
Brittania Shipyard, National Historic Site of Canada
5180 Westwater Drive, Richmond (604-718-8050)
The oldest shipyard community in British Columbia, this family-friendly attraction houses 12 buildings from as early as 1885. You can learn about the Murakami family and their wonderful yet heartbreaking story.
There’s also a former cannery, boatworks, stilt houses from the 1800s, the last surviving bunkhouse on the coast, and, of course, the shipyard.
Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site of Canada

This fantastic historic site is filled with information about the canning process and stories of the people who worked here. This cannery was the leading producer of canned salmon in British Columbia in 1894 and today showcases the impact it had on the area.
London Heritage Farm Tea Room in Richmond, BC

Step into the quaint historic site of the London family. This 1890s farmhouse has been restored to its former glory and furnished with period pieces. A real treat is to have tea and scones in the tearoom, served on antique china.
Steveston Museum
3811 Moncton Street, Richmond (604-271-6868)
Acting as the first bank in Steveston in 1905, this branch was one of the four in BC in the Northern Bank group.
Guests can walk through the building’s two floors, complete with historic photos and a recreated “Manager’s Office.” The museum also houses a functioning Canada Post Office for the community.
