Tyler Bancroft & Ben Worcester of Vancouver Band Said the Whale in Corner Brook, Newfoundland (Canada).
I came to Corner Brook, Newfoundland knowing one person. I certainly didn’t have any expectations of meeting up with an old friend who I used to pop popcorn with at the Fifth Avenue Cinemas in Vancouver. But as I sat checking my email at the Backlot bar at Grenfell College, I noticed a CBC poster of the Vancouver band, “Said the Whale.” Wait a sec, I know them!
I gave the poster a double take: my good buddy Ben Worcester is one of the frontmen of the band and someone I haven’t seen in ages. Actually, the last time I saw him play was when another one of his bands was called The Millionaires.
What were they doing in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, of all places?! When we showed up at the show that night, he had the exact same question: what are you doing in Corner Brook?! We kept shaking our heads in disbelief.
The show was fantastic, although super short. Hannah Georgas opened for them using the same band, and then joined Said the Whale for a few songs afterwards, too. The small crowd lapped it up and stuck around to buys CDs and brand merchandise (pink band panties anyone?!).

Said the Whale is on a cross Canada tour right now and there’s a slight possibility I’ll be able to catch them in Winnipeg, as I will be there after this Newfoundland trip. We’ll see; at this point, I realize that anything can happen.
What I Liked:
- After the show, I went into the girl’s washroom and heard some very drunk young ladies say, “That was so amazing! I’ve been waiting for them to come for so long. This night was so awesome! I wish they had played for way longer.” Groupies are fun
- What an unbelievable coincidence of running into Ben and Said the Whale in the small city of Corner Brook. I’m still in happy shock…
