On Wednesday night, a mild Toronto evening, I was so enthused about Holt Renfrew’s holiday window unveiling. I had spent the day at Holt learning about their fabulous personal shopping services, and was told that Macy Gray and Patti LaBelle were performing at the store that night.

For the last few years, Holt Renfrew has been unveiling their holiday window designs at the beginning of the season. They close down Bloor Street from Yonge to Bay and have a small stage installed. The crowd of about 100 gathered to hear the show, hosted by Entertainment Tonight Canada’s Rosey Edeh and Roz Weston.

But things were a bit funky for Macy Gray. Her three songs were sung in slurred words and swaggered moves. She was quite obviously not sober and couldn’t keep up with the fast-paced remix of her hit, “I Try.” I must admit, it was still amazing to see her live, but I wonder if she had been celebrating a bit beforehand…?

On the other hand, Patti LaBelle lit up the stage and rocked the crowd in the way only she can. It was phenomenal and a total treat for those who came downtown Toronto for this free concert.

Holt Renfrew kept the store open until 9:00 pm for shoppers to get a head start on their Christmas shopping. 2% of the sales were donated to their charity of choice, the Children’s Wish Foundation. I thought that was a nice touch (and I’m sure they did very well for sales that night, too).
