“There aren’t any good restaurants in Corner Brook” I was told before coming here to Newfoundland. Well, I can now prove that statement wrong.

For lunch today we decided to check out a small bistro that I’ve been eyeing since I got here. Sitting pretty on one of the one way downtown streets, the Bay of Islands Bistro is only about a year old.

Executive Chef Mark Babstock serves up lunch and dinner dishes and has wicked weekly specials:

  • Tuesdays and Thursdays: $6 a pound mussels
  • Wednesdays: $10 share plates
  • Saturdays: Prime Rib Night

Otherwise, a well-rounded menu of seafood and meat dishes are the best I found in town.

We went with the organic green salad to share, filled with fresh spinach, warmed goat cheese, hazelnuts and maple vinaigrette. Then we got an order of fish & chips (two enormous pieces of fish, a whole one of which had to be taken home in a doggy bag), and a vegetarian panini stuffed with zucchini, peppers, olive tapenade (yuk-I don’t like olives) and goat cheese.

Neither of us could finish (although we did polish off the yummy sea salt fries), so we have a full lunch for tomorrow.

The great thing about the Bay of Islands Bistro is that they know how to create a hip environment while sticking to upscale food (for Corner Brook). A funky music selection adds to the charm, and I loved the clean, contemporary interior design that’s more simple than in any way pretentious.

What I Liked:

  • Large portions of solid food, a nice drink menu and even some leftovers made a lovely meal.
  • I loved that the chef was our server, as well as the co-owner who helped out as well. I felt like we were V.I.P. guests, but everyone got the same treatment.
