My time in Tulum, Mexico was a pretty neat experience, all considering. The souvenir I was hoping not to bring back, though, was salmonella poisoning. I got confirmation from the Doctor’s office yesterday that I did, indeed, bring some salmonella home in my gut.
Granted, while staying at some cabanas on the beach, I took no precautions and ate all the fresh fruit, ice cubes in my drinks, and all the other things you’re not “supposed” to eat. I’m tough, I thought, I won’t get sick.
My stomach started acting up on the Tuesday, four days after I arrived. It wasn’t extreme, mostly just uncomfortable. It got a bit worse by Thursday, but I was leaving the next day, so I just left it. There was a Doctor of Chinese Medicine having dinner with me, Dr. David Chagala from Colorado, so he gave a treatment right there at the table and it seemed to help a little bit.
Upon returning back to Vancouver, I decided to play it safe and visit the Doctor’s office. I took my specimens to the lab and hoped for the best. The phone call yesterday actually comforts me, as at least there’s a reason for the weird sounds and feelings in my stomach.
Fortunately, the sickness has not been severe, mostly just staying at uncomfortable. It come and goes. Salmonella is just not the kind of souvenir I had hoped to bring home.
