The East Coast Choreography Challenge at the New Brunswick Scottish Highland Games Festival.
I have loved watching the highland dancers at the New Brunswick Highland Games Festival in Fredericton, NB. My favourite part was the East Coast Choreography Challenge. This is where dancers can use traditional highland steps, but add contemporary style into the mix.
The music and costumes are also included in this criteria, so they can design attire in a way that includes a splash of Celtic, but doesn’t have to be traditional.
Below is a video from the winning group at this year’s competition. The dance was remarkable: fun, difficult and I just adored the red dresses with Scottish tartan sashes.
What I Liked:
- What a great idea to have this type of competition, where the dancers can expand on their traditional highland training and dance outside the box.
- The dancers seemed to love performing in this competition. It’s too bad there were only two entries, as I could have watched it for much longer.
