The best way to kick off the Fall season is to go on an exhilarating trip. Luck is with me this year, then. On September first I leave on an epic journey to Baffin Island, Nunavut. 12 days aboard a small cruise ship will take me along the eastern coast of Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic. I’ve never been on a cruise before, and honestly, have always been quite positive I wouldn’t like it, but the company I’m going with seems pretty amazing.

Adventure Canada has small ships (100 guests) and uses zodiacs to transport us to the northern communities and other remote spots. It sounds like the best of both worlds: the comfort of a ship and the flexibility to get off in the wilderness and see wildlife. The information package that came in the mail this weekend was a treasure-trove of information; I’m still reading through it for packing tips and what to expect when I get there.
Did you know that you’re not supposed to knock on the door of an Inuit family’s house, but are just supposed to enter? This is because guests are always welcome. And don’t try to be polite by entering quietly, as this signifies sneaking in behind the host’s backs. Make normal noises and, if no one’s home, have a cup of tea and wait for their return.
I’ll have much more to tell you once I return, so watch this blog for news on my adventures. I’ll even have a video camera with me, so don’t be surprised if I catch a few polar bears!
