The exhilarating past two days of a glacier tour and fishing is over and today we made our way to the infamous Beaver Creek. Actually, it was only infamous to me, as Jim had been talking about it since the beginning of my trip.

Beaver Creek, Yukon: home to about 110 residents and the most westerly community in Canada, is pretty much an overnight stop for motor coach tours and those who need a driving break from the Alaska Highway.

A very nice log visitor’s centre, along with a cute church, outdoor gold rush history display and general store make up the town. A few hotels pack in the visitors. A walking trail at each end of the community goes on for about two kilometres.

The star of the show, though, is the Beaver Creek Rendez-Vous show at the Westmark Inn where I stayed (very basic rooms and an old hotel on the highway).

What can I say about the Rendez-Vous show? It’s small town enthusiasm and charm overrides its small town jokes. Sort of. It’s a night out that you have to experience- not only because it’s the only thing to do, but because you’ll meet lots of other travellers and have a good laugh. It’s also best to keep the drinks coming.

What I Liked:

  • On the way to Beaver Creek we stopped at Silver City, an almost ghost town (it’s just off the Alaska Highway and still shown on territory maps). Wooden cabins with fallen-in roofs dot the side of the road, while purple fireweed crowd around and through the dilapidated buildings.
  • Beaver Creek has a sense of humour about its position in life, which is a good thing.
  • You’ll leave town shouting “Potholes!” and singing, “It’s coffee time in Beaver Creek!” from the Rendez-Vous show. Coffee time does actually exist each day, when the locals gather around a cuppa joe to catch up on the latest news.
