Driving south through the lovely St. Ann’s Bay, I crossed the Englishtown Ferry and made my way to Baddeck. This town is counted as the hub of tourist activity in Cape Breton, mostly because of the many Baddeck accommodations and the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site of Canada.

I was lucky enough to stay at the Auberge Gisele’s Inn, located near the middle of town. This large inn is perched on top of a hill and has a European elegance throughout. A really lovely accommodation.

I stayed in the back building (there are three) that had a motel entrance. My room was gorgeous- loved the rich colours and refined furnishings. The restaurant is just as nice and the staff super friendly. Although dinner is a four-course affair and not as inexpensive, I think my full breakfast cost something like $7 CAD, which was surprising.

On the way to Baddeck, I also happened upon one of the most unusual and unique accommodations that I saw in Nova Scotia. A castle. But not an ancient one, a newly built one made to look old. Castle Moffett is a bit too much for some in Cape Breton, but others love the old world charm.

I happened to like it, as it’s the only one of its kind that I saw. It’s a five star luxury bed and breakfast with rates that start at $250 but can go up to $2,000 per night for a 2-bedroom suite with two bathrooms, two fireplaces, and a living room. There’s a nice little brook that runs underneath the property, too.

I then had a lobster supper at the nearby Lynwood Inn. The sun was just about to set and I sat out on the patio sipping my Jost wine (Nova Scotia’s largest winery) and cracked my lobster.

What I Liked:

  • Baddeck has a lively feel to it and is a good base for a lot of Cape Breton Island exploration.
  • The Auberge Gisele’s Inn is a nice place to stay for location, elegance and fairly reasonable prices.
  • Castle Moffett is heaven for some (and a bit too pretentious as an accommodation in Cape Breton for others). I think it’s a pretty neat idea, but then again, I’ve always dreamed of living in a castle).
