Travel to Antigonish, Nova Scotia in Canada

After really liking the small community of Guysborough, I drove north to the pretty town of Antigonish, Nova Scotia. This is a university town (St. Francis Xavier University) and is filled with picturesque brick buildings.

I loved the feel here, with students everywhere and a young vibe going on. The main street is lined with boutique shops, cute cafés and one-off restaurants. I particularly liked Gabrieau’s Bistro, with an extensive menu and classy interior.

There’s also an ultra casual lobster eatery right on the highway called Lobster Treat Restaurant (241 Post Road is the official address, but it’s on the Trans Canada Highway, 902-863-5465) that’s good for large meals and seafood dishes.

Antigonish, Nova Scotia Hotels
My favourite accommodation near downtown is the Antigonish Victorian Inn. This turn of the century house was gorgeously renovated in 1997 to keep the charm of the building but add modern amenities.

The rooms are all furnished with Victorian themes, each with different colours, size and shape. The house has oak hardwood floors, a corner turret with curved glass and a conical roof. It’s hard not to be swept away by bed and breakfasts like this.

What I liked:

  • Unpretentious, lively small town with lovely brick buildings.
  • Lots of young people, which means special events, a nightlife and lively streets.
  • This is home to the Antigonish Highland Games, the largest and longest running event of its kind outside of Scotland.
  • I didn’t use Antigonish, Canada as a travel base, but I would on a future visit to Nova Scotia. It’s worth spending a bit more time in, I think.
