Port Hood on Cape Breton Island, Canada

After spending the night in Truro, I made the drive east along the Trans Canada Highway (highway 104) to Cape Breton Island. After crossing the Canso Causeway (which connects the island to the mainland), I was delighted to see the signs now included Gaelic.

Taking highway 19 north along the Ceilidh Trail, I made my way to Port Hood, a small fishing village on the western side of Cape Breton Island.

On my way down to see the wharf where the fisherman haul in lobster and snow crab, I was surprised to see, on the welcoming sign to Port Hood, an NHL logo. I didn’t know which player was from here.

It turns out Al MacInnis was born in Port Hood. The Hall of Fame hockey player was most known, among many other things, for his hard slapshot. He played for the Calgary Flames and St. Louis Blues until he retired in 2005.

Now, the Al MacInnis Sports Centre in Port Hood is the home of the Cape Breton West Islanders, the island’s major midget hockey team.

What I liked:

  • It’s always a fun surprise to see a classic hockey name in an unexpected place.
  • I had to get out of the car and snap a quick photo. When will I ever come back here?
