At the east side of the Cabot Trail is the town of Ingonish, Nova Scotia. Like Chéticamp, this is another stopping point for most before driving the Cabot Trail and is an entryway to the Cape Breton Highlands National Park.

Ingonish Hotels
I stayed at the Lantern Hill & Hollow, a small accommodation right on the Cabot Trail (but set back so that it’s located right on the beach). Sharon, the owner, was lovely and gave me lots of local information and tips on travelling in the area.

I stayed in the main house, which has three rooms, all with sleek hardwood floors, modern amenities and a shared living room. The six cottages down nearer to the water all come equipped with self-sufficient kitchens, BBQs, patio furniture and bonfire wood. Take a few steps and you’re on the 3 km (2 mi) beach. Trust me, the sound of the lapping ocean at night is a great way to wind down from a day of driving.

Keltic Lodge Ingonish Beach
Probably the most well known accommodation is the Keltic Lodge Ingonish. It’s part of the Cape Breton Highlands National Park and has been around for many, many years (and it’s time those rooms got a good, solid reno).

The location is stunning, overlooking Cape Smokey and within walking distance to Ingonish Beach. The drive up to the resort was my favourite part- the long, elegant driveway was surrounded on both sides by old growth forest and gorgeous wild flowers. The resort itself is grand, with rooms in the main lodge, at the inn and in private cottages.

What I Liked:

  • This is another good base to explore the Cabot Trail and Cape Breton Highlands National Park.
  • The Main Street Restaurant & Bakery (37764 Cabot Trail, 902-285-2225) serves up delicious seafood pasta dishes in an ultra casual atmosphere (service can be slow on busy nights). The bakery is a nice treat, especially if you’re staying in the main house of Lantern Hill & Hollow, where breakfast is not served.
  • The Keltic Lodge Resort and Spa is an older hotel but the setting is pretty majestic.
