Cabot Trail, Cape Breton Highlands National Park

I powered up in the Acadian community of Chéticamp and then was off to drive the famous Cabot Trail, Cape Breton. Roaming through the Cape Breton Highlands National Park was about as thrilling as I hoped it would be.

So far during my road trip through Nova Scotia the weather had been gorgeous: the temperature wavered around 20? Celsius and there were rarely clouds in the sky. But as the day for my drive along the Cabot Trail approached, there were promises of rain and thunderstorms. Damn, I thought, if there’s one day that I want a clear sky, it’s for my first time seeing the glory of the Cabot Trail.

Alas, someone was listening.

I woke up to the sun already warming the ground and set out for the drive. There was not a cloud in the sky that obstructed my view and I made the climb, dips and twists of the highway. It really is as magnificent as it’s always written about.

I got out at pretty much all of the photo ops, veering across double lines to make it (if you’re driving from Chéticamp and northeast to Ingonish, you have to carefully cross double lines to reach the photo pull outs).

The views are remarkable. I was always eager to get out of the car in order to hear the “oohs and ahs” of the people standing there staring dumbfounded at the valleys and mountains around them. It made me proud to live in a country this beautiful and to share Canada with those who have never been.

The Cabot Trail is one of those things that I’ve read about so much, I was afraid it wouldn’t live up to my expectations. The Cape Breton Highlands National Park really does live up to the hype; you could spend the whole summer here exploring the trails, camping, looking for wildlife, spending time in the surrounding communities and even golfing.

What I Liked:

  • The Cabot Trail did not disappoint. It was as spectacular a drive as I had heard it would be.
  • Photographers beware: there are photo ops everywhere and you really can’t go wrong. Don’t rip yourself off by leaving too little time
  • Bring a picnic and have lunch overlooking one of the many lakes.
  • Check out the wildlife (yes, there are moose and bears) by getting off the road and hiking through the trails.
