After learning much First Nations history about the Bridge River people in Lillooet, next up was one of the whitewater rafting trips on the Thompson River, BC with Kumsheen Rafting Resort.

In order to prepare, we fuelled up at their Cutting Board Restaurant (nice, simple lunch choices and a more sophisticated dinner menu). Then it was off to the Thompson River for my very first of what I hope to be many whitewater rafting trips.

Power Rafting

The river rafting season hasn’t quite bloomed into full gear yet, so we went power rafting on a similar boat, but with an engine instead of paddles. The technique: just to hold on for dear life!

As we took off down the seriously-named Devil’s Gorge Run, I sat on the front, right hand side of the boat a little nervously. If I fell into the whirling waters, would I remember all of the things I had just learned in the safety briefing? Relax, go with the tide and meet up with the boat after the rapids. Okay.

The Frog Rapid was first up (all named by Kumsheen owner Bernie Fandrich) and was one of the best. We all cheered for more and did that one a few times. My favourite of the afternoon was the Mother-in-Law, which seemed to be the wettest drench I got.

Others included the Devil’s Kitchen, Witch’s Cauldron, Cutting Board, Garburator, and Jaws. Of course, the guides call them all out with the ending “… of death!” in their best mock-horror voice. All are class three to four rapids along the 16 km (10 miles) from Nicomen Falls to Lytton.

We saw bald eagles, many trains passing above us and passed some exquisite rock faces (where Kumsheen also does rappelling and rock climbing trips).

18 rapids and some bad jokes later and our guide Drey pulled up safely to shore to end one of her many whitewater rafting trips this season.

What I liked:

  • The staff at Kumsheen Rafting Resort are phenomenal, friendly, knowledgeable and super easy going. Make sure to check out the really cute toques at the gift shop, handmade by two staff members.
  • The 18 rapids make for a full trip, with one power and one paddle rafting trip a day in the summer months.
  • Kumsheen also does rock climbing, rappelling, kayaking and bike trips in the area.
  • While we were waiting in the lobby before our trip, the staff put on a video of the dry grad trip that students took with them two days ago. What a blast! That’s a really neat idea for grads to have fun without having to get into trouble.
  • For overnight stays, they have tipi and cabin tents equipped with beds and linen. Quiet time starts at 11:00 pm in order to keep things family-friendly.
