Breakfast aboard the Whistler Mountaineer train from Vancouver to Whistler, BC (Canada).
After a seven-day road trip through Alberta, Canada, it’s now time to spend six days touring BC. I woke up at 6:00 am to catch the Whistler Mountaineer train from North Vancouver to Whistler.
Even at such an early hour, the staff were upbeat and had coffee and tea out at the platform. A small red carpet greeted us as we all boarded the train and took our seats. I was fortunate to be treated to the dome car, an all-windows coach that has pretty spectacular for viewing.

All Whistler Mountaineer trips start with a mimosa toast, before a full breakfast is served (a fruit plate, omelette and coffee/tea). From there we saw Nina, a retired woman who lives facing the train tracks in North Vancouver and who has been waving at the Whistler Mountaineer train since it’s inaugural ride four years ago (although she misses Thursdays’ return trip because she’s volunteering).
The only other time she missed was when she was on the train. Manager Chris Woods surprised her one-day when she was waving the train by and jumped off to present her with two free tickets, Romeo-style. She was on last year’s first trip of the season.
What I liked:
The mimosa toast at the beginning of the ride is a nice start to the trip.

The heritage car in the middle of the train is a common area for people to use. The windows open and the seats are bench-style. This is a good alternative for when the adjoining observation car gets crowded during the frequent photo ops.
Service is excellent and first class.
The upgrade to the dome car is much brighter and you can experience the feeling of seeing the mountains in all their glory, right from your seat.
Unlike airplanes, wine and beer flows freely!
