After a day travelling in the Rocky Mountaineer, I ended up in Quesnel, BC for the night. The train arrived late, so we didn’t have much time to explore before hitting the hay at the downtown hotel Quesnel (Best Western).

I did get a chance to run around in search of a few fire hydrants, though. In Quesnel, artist Jerii Cassidy was commissioned to paint a series of fire hydrants around the downtown core. They’re all based on historical figures of Quesnel’s history and are called the “Little People.” There’s even a little map that you can follow to find them all over the town.

My favourite is the Can Can Girl, who were known as the Hurdy-Gurdy Girls, the beautiful Native Mother with her child, and Charlie Chaplin, who was sans moustache and derby hat. Of course, I had to seek out the Hockey Player, too.

What I liked:

  • This is the kind of town that everyone says “Hi” when you walk by and will help you out if they can.
  • The painted fire hydrants is such a cute idea and makes a fun little adventure, especially for kids or adults like me who act like kids.

  • You couldn’t find pretence here if you put out a search effort.
  • The walking tour map of the “Little People” gives a bit of history about why these figures/peopel were chosen to be painted.
