Vendors at the Vesna Festival of Ukrainian dance in Saskatoon, SK (Canada)
When Ukrainians immigrated to Canada at the turn of the century, many settled in Saskatoon and Saskatchewan.
Ukrainian culture is thriving here. I went to the annual Vesna Festival, where cultural dancing and music was on display, as were Ukrainian costumes. Oh, and food, much food.
Just on the edge of downtown Saskatoon is the Ukrainian Museum of Canada. This small museum is a great place to learn about the history of Ukrainian people and how they immigrated to Canada, as well as see some traditional clothing and objects.
A pottery exhibit goes on display next week, of which the beginning was being set up when I visited. It looks like it’ll be great.

The tiny gift shop is also a good resource. There are tons of books, especially, both in English and Ukrainian. Of course, you’ll also find little decorated pysanky (Ukrainian Easter eggs) and sashes.
What I liked:
- This is a very intimate museum and set up with lots of interesting information.
- The focus is on Ukrainian immigration to Canada.
- The staff are approachable, so you can ask lots of questions!
