As someone from Vancouver who is used to some of the best variety and quality of cuisine in the world, it’s difficult to go to a city like Saskatoon, SK where the restaurant industry is only slowly growing.

A few new downtown restaurants for Saskatoon food to look out for in the upcoming months are FLINT, Staqatto Piano House and Tusq, all of which seem to be quite anticipated by the locals.

I tried the Barking Fish Tavern, Fuzion Sushi & Deli Bar and O’Shea’s Irish Pub this time around.

Barking Fish Tavern (154 2nd Avenue South, 306-665-2220): Although a small room, this trendy nightspot has great food and ultra friendly service (but not in an annoying way). I was kept entertained at the bar as I ate dinner and watched the Canucks game, the general manager taking a shift as a bartender and another bartender making sure the stagette party was having a good time.

I tried two tapas: the sushi rolls, which were absolutely delicious, and the seafood crab tacos, which were light and filled with sushi rice. A nice mix of Asian and Californian touches on the menu.

I’m always as happy when I see a Malbec wine on the menu as when I can order crème brulée for dessert. I got both and left in a very good mood.

Fuzion Sushi & Deli Bar (2- 100 2nd Avenue South, 305-244-2005): A take out and casual eatery on 2nd Avenue, this Japanese fast food restaurant is good for a quick meal while you’re downtown Saskatoon. The sushi was okay although, again, the price and quality just don’t compare to Vancouver (I swear we have the best sushi outside of Japan!).

The service was top notch, though, and super friendly. $16 CAD for two rolls and a cup of tea.

O’Shea’s Irish Pub (222 2nd Avenue South, 305-384-7444): I was actually on my way to Taj Mahal for Indian food when I realized that the building was being torn down and the restaurant was moving. A guy having a smoke outside the soon-to-open FLINT restaurant gave me a few lunch recommendations, but everything was closed because it was Sunday.

So I walked into the only restaurant that seemed to be open (that wasn’t a fast food joint), O’Shea’s Irish Pub, and walked up to their sunny rooftop patio. There’s a bar up there and the staff were great.

I had a healthy veggie wrap on a menu filled with burgers, steak and lots of potatoes. It was surprisingly fresh and delicious, packed with greens and an overflowing side salad. The inside bar is all dark wood and I’m sure a fun spot to hang out at night.

What I liked:

  • The Barking Fish Tavern is fantastic. I love the staff, the food and the atmosphere: stylish enough without being snobby in any way. Good Saskatoon food.
  • The Barking Fish Tavern is fantastic. Did I mention that yet?
  • The rooftop patio at O’Shea’s Irish Pub is perfect for a pint and good conversation on a sunny day in Saskatoon.
