Kalyna Country doesn’t seem to be known outside of Edmonton, AB. When I told my family and friends I was going to Alberta to explore a region called Kalyna Country, I got mostly blank stares.

World's Largest Ukrainian Easter Egg (Pysanka) in Vegerville, Alberta (Canada)
22,000 square kilometres of land east of Edmonton, Alberta is a melting pot of European cultures that settled here. Most prominently are those of Ukrainian descent.
The epitome of Ukrainian culture, of course, are the fancy, decorated Easter eggs (Pysanky). As you drive east along highway 16, you’ll see a giant Pysanka in Vegerville, Alberta.
The province is known for its massive attraction replicas. Drumheller has the giant dinosaurs, Vulcan has Star Trek’s Starship Enterprise, Mundare has the world’s largest sausage and Vegerville has the Pysanka, which is also the largest in the world.
Especially for kids, stop at the Ukrainian Easter egg and do the typical tourist thing by taking your photo with it. You can also picnic, use the restroom and camp at the park.
What I liked:
- Restrooms on long, lonely highways are always a good thing.
- When you see a giant decorated Ukrainian Easter egg, you pull over!
- Vegerville Pysanka: 31 feet high, 18.3 feet wide, 32,000 pounds heavy.
