I hadn’t been down to Coal Harbour in a long time. It was a gorgeous day and I decided to take a trip to the new-ish Crime Lab Vancouver restaurant (once housed in a real crime lab on West Pender Street).

I was greeted by a patio overlooking Coal Harbour and the much-used jogging, rollerblading and cycling waterfront path. It didn’t hurt that the afternoon was gorgeous and the sun getting ready to set.

Inside, the Crime Lab is all windows and views. Attention to the smallest detail, whether it’s the hand crafted wood blocks on the bar or Warholesque portrait (ask about the history of it- it’s from the original location), the design is pretty stunning.

Although a small space, it has different options: the sunny patio, small interior tables, a booth, the bar and a “bar and booth mix” (see photo).

I only had a chance to try a seafood soup and lovely prawn appy, but was eyeing the Longcut Vegetable Spaghetti dish on the menu: the noodles are actually made from veggies and cut to look like noodles, so it’s a great vegan dish ($19 CAD).

The menu is quite extensive and the alcohol list long. I have a feeling this will be a very busy place come summer (it opened at the end of last August). They even have free wireless if you want to hang out during the day and get some work done or are travelling through and need to check you email.

What I liked:

  • The fabulous west coast feel of the interior design.
  • The staff are just as great.
  • There’s a neat mix of upscale atmosphere with completely laid back Vancouver style.
  • Perfect downtown Vancouver location.
