Hockey Clichés: What Are Your Favourites?

Hockey broadcasters have been using the same hockey clichés for many years. Since I began cheering for the Canucks while still in the womb, I have heard so many coaches, players and colour analysts use the same hockey quotes to describe the game.

Just for fun, below is a list of my favourite clichés. Add yours to the comments section below.

Hockey Clichés

  • The next goal wins.
  • They’re writing their own destiny this year.
  • A scoring chance on one end turns into a goal on the other.
  • Time is their biggest enemy right now.
  • That’s a goal scorer’s goal.
  • That hit was a game changer/momentum shifter.

Hockey Goalies

  • Your goalie has to be your best penalty killer.
  • He stood on his head!
  • He was putting on a clinic!
  • When he’s playing well, the puck looks like a beach ball.

Hockey Player Clichés

  • It’s a tough pill to swallow.
  • If we’re doing all the little things right, we’re a tough team to play against.
  • We’ve just got to bear down.
  • We’re taking this one game at a time.
  • We just need to play between the whistles.

Coaches

  • It’s just boys being boys.
  • A win is a win.
  • That’s what happens when you get pucks to the net.
  • He just could not light the lamp.
  • He’s a character player.

Stanley Cup Playoffs

  • It’s playoff hockey.
  • That’s what playoff hockey is all about.

I know there’s more- list them below!

Throw the puck towards the net and good things happen.

Great post! I know there are hundreds of clichés out there, not sure why only two are coming to mind:

“He’s gripping the stick too tight.”

“Regular season games are won with offense, playoff games are won with defense.”

Nice! Here’s another one I heard again today:
“Good players find ways to elevate their game” (this one after Evgeni Malkin had a kick ass game 3 in what was turning into the Crosby vs. Ovechkin series- the Penguins finally beat the Capitals in this playoff series).
And, a hockey cliché often heard about Roberto Luongo and other outstanding hockey goalies:
“He’ll stop everything he can see.”

    “It’s a gut-check time”
