Welcomed to the Alberta Train (aka. Whistler Mountaineer) in Vancouver, British Columbia (Canada).
My alarm woke me up at 4:30 am yesterday in order to get me to the shuttle by 5:30 am. After a short bus ride to the Whistler Mountaineer station in North Vancouver, Canada and I was boarding the privately-run Alberta train up to Whistler to catch some of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games action from Whistler village.
The regular Whistler Mountaineer season from Vancouver to Whistler doesn’t begin until mid-May, so the ingenious folks at Travel Alberta bought out the trains during the Vancouver Olympics to transport Albertans, guests, stakeholders, athletes, dignitaries and media back and forth.
For those wanting exposure during the Olympics, Jon Mamela tells me (Vice President of Marketing for Travel Alberta), the train was a unique way to get people talking about Alberta.

Alberta Cuisine: A Breakfast Omlette aboard the Alberta Train during Vancouver 2010 Olympics.
Three hours each way, we were treated to Alberta cuisine, white cowboy hats (a nod to the Calgary Stampede) and lots of Alberta paraphernalia.
Best of all, the staff were able to stream the Olympics live from CTV onto four flat screen TVs in the train’s lounge. We were able to see the women’s Team Canada hockey team win their gold medal against long-time rivals the USA. What a moment!
Shortly after, the connection went drastically downhill, but we also managed to see Joannie Rochette’s historical bronze medal skate in figure skating. What a great way to travel ![]()
