I wasn’t planning on seeing any of the Olympics sports competitions during the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games. Tickets are expensive to the events I want to see and I just wasn’t interested in spending the time to find them.
So I was delighted when a friend of mine was able to get me a single ticket to last night’s China vs. Finland women’s hockey game at UBC Thunderbird Stadium. It was the first and probably last Olympic sports event that I will be able to catch.

The crowd was, unsurprisingly, filled with red. Not cheering for Canada, of course, but for China. The population in Vancouver and nearby Richmond has a high percentage of Asian people, many coming from China. It made for a raucous arena and lots of back and forth with the enthusiastic Finnish fans.
I was happy to be sitting in row 3, just to the side of the Chinese team’s bench. From up close and personal, these are the best seats I’ve ever had for a hockey team since I was a kid watching my older brother play

Team China Goalie Yao Shi was the Star of the Show at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics at UBC Thunderbird Stadium.
Although China opened the scoring in the first period with a shorthanded goal and held their own for the first half of the game, the Fins outplayed them for the rest and won 2-1. The story of the game was Chinese goaltender Yao Shi, who had an outstanding performance for Team China.
Although I was cheering for the losing team yesterday night, I still had an amazing time at my first Olympics sporting event. Go Canada go!
