There was so much scepticism and excitement when the Molson Canadian Hockey House was announced. I stopped by the media preview yesterday to see what all the hype was about. This 65,000 square foot tent on the shore of False Creek is excepted to welcome 50,000 fans over 17 days (it’s open during the Vancouver 2010 Olympics from February 12-28th, 2010).

The catch is that the price tag is a little bit different from other “houses” or pavilions, almost all of which are free. At the Molson Canadian Hockey House, it costs $99 for a one-day fan zone pass. Unfortunately, those are ALL SOLD OUT now, except for February 14th.

The only way to get in is to purchase a $450+ VIP lounge pass (they run up to $750 for one day). This includes access; complimentary open bar and meals; access to Hockey Canada alumni; and “access to host/hostess service” (I’m not sure what that last one means…).

Regardless, the hockey house is going to be a big party on a big scale. Live performances include names like Sam Roberts, Tom Cochrane, Colin James and the Barenaked Ladies. The hockey games, of course, will be blasted from giant HD screens.

Is it worth the price tag? Well, here are a few of the events:

  • February 14th: “Paint the Town Red Day” will feature Canadian Olympians Susan Auch, Jeffrey Buttle, Marie France Dubreuil, Carol Huynh, Adam Kreek, Patrice Lauzon, Elizabeth Manley and Theobald and Kyle Shewfelt.
  • February 15th: The Canadian women’s hockey team will be celebrated at the “Globe and Mail Ladies’ Night.”
  • February 19th: #99 himself, Wayne Gretzy, will be appearing for the “Wayne Gretzy Tribute Day.”
  • February22: 22 Players will be inducted to the Triple Gold Club, athletes who have won the three major team prizes in hockey (Olympic gold, IIFH World Championship gold and the Stanley Cup).

Did I mention they plan to pour 350,000 cans of Molson Canadian? There’s no doubt this will be a fantastic party place. You’ll just have to pay a pretty penny for it.

I can’t tell if it is worth it…the VIP lounge looks a little economy to me. What does it really look like (plastic chairs and tables)?

Oh yeah, the place is a big tent, so you can’t expect anything fancy. VIP doesn’t mean lounge chairs and sleek tables here… The cost is more for the experience and to be separated from the “regular” crowd, I guess.
