Although Chinese New Years is over and we’ve gone into the year of the tiger, the folks at Aberdeen Centre (4151 Hazelbridge Way), in Richmond, Canada, are keeping the tradition alive.

Chinese Lion Dancing

I hopped on the Canada Line this week and made my way to Richmond to see the Chinese lion dancers in action. Beside the central fountain, a small group of lion dancers converse, seemingly preparing their movements and jumps for the next show.

As the drums began, two men slipped inside the lion costume and made it come to life. The animal twitched, jumped, stared and barked silently as the drums played on and the audience in the mall snapped photos. Kids were grinning from ear to ear, giggling at the lion who had quite the personality.

But it doesn’t stop there. You can still find the lion dancing to the drumbeat at Aberdeen Centre daily from now until February 26th. Performances are at 1:15pm, 2:15pm, 3:15pm and 4:15pm (excluding the 1:15pm performance on February 16th) in the central atrium. Kung Hei Fat Choi!

Now watch the cute video below of the lion as he shakes a few good moves.
